Features Walk Neolithic Orkney

Are you visiting Orkney?
The monuments in the 'Heart of Neolithic Orkney' are unique in Europe and a must-see.
They are best visited on foot and this app will guide you past five stunning sites in a 7.5 km walk, which will take about 2.5 hours to complete.
The directions and the in-depth information in the app have been compiled by a local archaeologist.
Enjoy!

Background:
On an isthmus between the Loch of Harray and the Loch of Stenness lies a stunning group of archaeological monuments, set in a largely unaltered prehistoric cultural landscape.
'The Heart of Neolithic Orkney' was inscribed in the Unesco World Heritage List in 1999.
It consists of four monuments that can be visited today (Maeshowe, the Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae) as well as a number of unexcavated sites.
The importance of the area lies, however, in the combination of these monuments and their relation to the landscape.
The fact that there have been few changes to the landscape since Neolithic times has aided the preservation of these appealing monuments.
This tour will guide you from Maeshowe to the Stones of Stenness, and on to the Ring of Brodgar via Barnhouse and the Ness of Brodgar.
